The Salkantay Trek is one of the most impressive and adventurous routes to reach Machu Picchu, combining snow-capped mountains, turquoise lagoons, Andean valleys, and the Amazon jungle. During this 5-day journey, you will enjoy exclusive campsites, professional guides, and spectacular views from the Llactapata ruins before arriving at the Lost City of the Incas. Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Soraypampa

We begin the day with pick-up from your hotel starting at 4:30 a.m. Then, we will travel by tourist bus, passing through the towns of Izcuchaca and Limatambo, until reaching Mollepata (2,900 m a.s.l.) at around 7:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, there will be a S/ 20.00 fee for entry to Mollepata and Humantay Lagoon. Here, we will enjoy our first breakfast and leave up to 5 kilograms of luggage for our horsemen.

Afterwards, we’ll take a transport to Challacancha (3,380 m a.s.l.) on a one-hour drive. From this point, we’ll start a 3-hour hike until we reach Soraypampa (3,900 m a.s.l.), arriving around 1:30 p.m. Here, we will have our lunch and set up our first campsite. After lunch, we’ll take an excursion to the breathtaking Humantay Lagoon.

Humantay Lagoon: the ascent takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, reaching 4,220 m a.s.l., where we can admire the lagoon’s intense turquoise color and the majesty of the Apu Humantay glacier. We will then descend for about 40 minutes back to our Soraypampa campsite.

At 6:00 p.m., we’ll enjoy tea time, followed by a delicious dinner prepared by our chef. Finally, we’ll rest in our mountain cabins, surrounded by the impressive Andean scenery.

(12 km / 7.45 miles – Approx. 5 hours of hiking)

At 5:00 a.m., we will enjoy a nutritious breakfast before continuing our trek. We will begin the journey from Soraypampa toward the highest point of the trail, the Salkantay Pass, on a hike of approximately 3 hours. During the ascent, we’ll admire the imposing snow-capped peaks of Salkantay, Humantay, Tucarhuay, and Pumasillo (15,255 ft), passing through Salkantaypampa and Soyrococha, where we’ll see a small glacial lagoon.

Afterward, we will begin a 3-hour descent to Huayracmachay (12,467 ft), where we’ll enjoy a well-deserved lunch. As we continue, the landscape will transform dramatically as we enter the Andean cloud forest, filled with lush vegetation and warmer air.

Finally, we’ll descend for another 3 hours until we reach Colpapampa (9,514 ft), where we’ll set up our second campsite. There, we’ll enjoy a hot dinner prepared by our chef and rest surrounded by the peace and beauty of the Andes.

SORAYPAMPA-SALKANTAY-COLPAPAMPA (22 KM-10 HORAS)

We will have breakfast at 6:00 a.m., and then begin a 5-and-a-half-hour hike through the high jungle, with sections of ascents, descents, and flat terrain. Along the way, we will admire coffee plantations, orchids, begonias, bromeliads, and various medicinal plants traditionally used by local communities.

We’ll arrive at our lunch point in Playa Sahuayaco, where we’ll enjoy a buffet-style meal and have time to rest and relax in this warm and natural environment.

At 6:00 p.m., we’ll share afternoon tea, followed by a delicious dinner, before resting and preparing for the next day’s adventure.

COLPAPAMPA –PLAYA- (12 KM. 5 HORAS)

The dawn will greet us in a tropical zone, where we’ll enjoy a nutritious breakfast before continuing our journey toward Lucmabamba and Llactapata. We’ll hike for approximately three hours until reaching the Llactapata ruins, from where, weather permitting, we’ll have a panoramic view of the majestic Machu Picchu in the distance.

Afterward, we’ll descend for about two hours toward Hidroeléctrica, where we’ll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

Later, we’ll continue our trek through the tropical forest for about three more hours until we reach the town of Aguas Calientes, where we’ll check into a comfortable hotel and end the day with a delicious dinner at a local restaurant.

PLAYA SAHUAYACO – LUCMABAMBA- LLACTAPATA – HIDROELECTRICA – AGUAS CALIENTES (20 KM, 9 HORAS)

We will wake up very early in the morning to head to the imposing citadel of Machu Picchu, considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and one of the most important legacies of the Inca Empire. After a short trip, we will arrive at the entrance of the archaeological site, where we will begin our guided tour of approximately two hours.

During the tour, we will explore the main archaeological sectors, such as the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the Three Windows, the agricultural terraces, and the royal compounds, while our guide provides interesting explanations about the history, architecture, and profound spiritual significance of Machu Picchu.

After the guided tour, you will have free time to explore the sanctuary at your own pace, take panoramic photos, or simply enjoy the mystical atmosphere that surrounds this sacred place.

Later, we will descend back to the town of Aguas Calientes, where you can have lunch or rest before boarding the Expedition train, departing at 2:55 p.m. or 6:20 p.m., depending on availability. Upon arrival at the Ollantaytambo station, our private transport will be waiting to take you back to the city of Cusco, culminating an unforgettable experience at this world wonder.
